OBJECTIVE, SCOPE AND METHODOLOGY OF THE SURVEY

Small Industries Service Institute, Chennai, under the Ministry of Small Scale Industries, Govt. of India has undertaken the Industrial Potential Survey of Dharmapuri district as part of its activity for the year 2001-02. The main objective of the survey is to analyse the present industrial scenario of the district and to find out the scope for future development. To prepare the report basic data pertaining to the district were collected from various primary and secondary sources.

Basic information from published sources were collected from Chennai. Further, heads of various departments in the district were addressed along with well-designed formats for eliciting information from them. Officers from SISI, Chennai and its branch office at Coimbatore visited Dharmapuri district during August 2001 to collect primary data. The officials visited District Industries Centre, Dept. of Agriculture, Dept. of Horticulture, Dept. of Statistics, Dept. of Sericulture, Dept of Animal Husbandry, Dept. of Geology and Mines, Tamilnadu Tourism Dept., District Rural Development Agency, District forest Office, Lead Bank, Dairy Development Corporation, Tamilnadu Industrial Investment Corporation, SIPCOT, SIDCO etc. to gather information on resource endowment, infrastructure available, incentives offered etc. To gather information at block level, various block development offices, Panchayat Unions and Agriculture Development Offices were visited.

To obtain information from industrialists, industries associations like the Dharmapuri District Tiny & Small Scale Industries Association, Hosur Small and Tiny Industries Association ( HOSTIA), Hosur Industries Association (HIA) were contacted. Some of the industrial units were also visited.

Data collected from various sources were compiled and analysed. The analysis revealed that industrial activity in the district is confined to certain pockets only and there is regional imbalance. Industrial development takes place in and around Hosur and Thally and to a lesser extent in blocks like Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. Therefore, concerted efforts have to be taken to identify further industrial possibilities based on the resources available as well as the existing demand and to propagate the incentives offered both by the Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamilnadu for starting industrial units in the small scale sector, especially in undeveloped blocks to correct the imbalance as well as to promote overall industrial development in the district.
