MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY
OFFICE OF THE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSIONER
(SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES)
SSI BOARD & POLICY DIVISION
Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi,
Dated the 22nd Feb., 1993

To,

The Commissioner/Director of Industries,
All States/UTs.

Subject: - Registration of units engaged in Diamond cutting & polishing as well as pearl manufacturing through mechanical process as SSI - clarification reg.

Sir,

This office has been receiving from time to time, various representations from individuals/State Govts. / Export Promotion Council etc., for considering diamond cutting and polishing as well as pearl manufacturing as an SSI activity.

In this connection, I am to state that the proposals have been examined in this office and it has been decided that the units which are engaged in the manufacturing/processing of diamond i.e. diamond cutting and polishing, and pearls predominantly by manual operation using some traditional hand tools like hammer, forceps, tongs etc, are traditionally handicrafts industries and they come under the purview of Handicrafts Board. Such units need not be registered as SSI by the Director of Industries. For purposes of registration as SSI units with the Director of Industries, such units should be undertaking the manufacturing by mechanised process and possess substantial machinery, which is not hand operated.

Yours faithfully,
